John W. Campbell took over Astounding Stories in 1937 at age 27 and spent 34 years building the editorial foundation of modern science fiction — discovering Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Theodore Sturgeon, A.E. van Vogt, and dozens of others who defined the Golden Age of Science Fiction. The fan award named in his honor after his 1971 death ran for 50 years until author Jeannette Ng used her 2019 acceptance speech to call Campbell a fascist, leading the World Science Fiction Society to rename it the Astounding Award for Best New Writer in 2020. The cancellation of Campbell’s name from the award he inspired — by the genre and the institutions he built — is the clearest example yet of science fiction’s progressive establishment erasing the founders whose work made the genre worth having awards for.
