Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew first look revealed in Empire Magazine on September 17, 2026 confirms what Christian fans feared since the project was announced — an Aslan inspired by David Bowie with heterochromic eyes and red-striped face, voiced by Meryl Streep, in a film Gerwig describes as a “rock opera” with 1960s and 70s British rock as its “creative backbone.” The score is by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, Gerwig’s Barbie collaborators. The film releases February 12, 2027 on a $200 million budget. C.S. Lewis wrote explicitly in his own letters that Aslan is Christ — not a loose inspiration, not an allegory open to reinterpretation, but the stated intentional foundation the entire Chronicles of Narnia rests on. Replacing that theological architecture with David Bowie mythology is not a creative choice that leaves Lewis’s work intact. It is the work wearing Lewis’s work as a costume.
