Why can’t Batman just give his money away?

It’s one of the most common criticisms of Batman: Bruce Wayne is a billionaire living in one of the most crime-ridden cities in fiction. So instead of dressing like a bat and beating up criminals, why doesn’t he use his fortune to fight poverty, fund social programs, and fix Gotham City?

There’s just one problem.

Gotham’s problems go much deeper than money.

From Batman: Year One and Batman Begins to The Batman and Batman: The Animated Series*, Gotham is repeatedly portrayed as a city where organized crime, political corruption, compromised police, corrupt judges, and powerful criminals can undermine the very institutions meant to help ordinary people.

In this video, I take a serious look at the Batman money debate:

• Does Bruce Wayne actually help Gotham with his wealth?
• Could philanthropy reduce crime?
• Why can’t the Wayne Foundation simply fix Gotham?
• Does Batman make Gotham’s crime problem worse?
• Did Batman create villains like the Joker, Riddler, and Scarecrow?
• Is Bruce Wayne neglecting the real causes of crime?
• And does Gotham ultimately need Batman, Bruce Wayne…or both?

Bruce Wayne absolutely should use his money to help people.

But giving away his fortune and abandoning Batman are two very different things.

Because money can build a better Gotham.

Batman exists to make sure Gotham survives long enough to build it.
