Angel and the Badman Review: Can Zachary Levi Fill John Wayne’s Boots?

by 10.08.2026

Can Zachary Levi pull off a gritty outlaw? Today we’re reviewing Angel and the Badman, the new Angel Studios remake of the 1947 John Wayne classic, co-starring Tommy Lee Jones and Neal McDonough.
Angel Studios continues to punch well above its weight for an independent studio, delivering high production value, strong heart, and a genuine story of redemption. While rated PG-13, this is easily accessible and great for the whole family.
In this video, I break down:
The Lead Performance: Why I was initially skeptical of Zachary Levi playing a gruff, hardened gunslinger—and how quickly he proved me wrong.
The Heavyweights: Tommy Lee Jones delivering the steady, top-tier performance you always expect from him.
The Perfect Villain: Neal McDonough doing what he does best, playing an effortlessly menacing antagonist despite being one of Hollywood’s nicest guys off-screen.
The Themes: How the film handles its core themes of character growth, second chances, and classic Western morality.
