The C.S. Lewis Estate has given its blessing to Greta Gerwig’s Netflix Narnia adaptation — but who exactly speaks for C.S. Lewis? The estate is controlled by his stepsons, men who inherited the rights but who are not Lewis’s own children and whose approval comes attached to a financial arrangement with Netflix. Lewis wrote the Chronicles of Narnia as Christian allegory, was a lifelong Christian apologist, and his faith was inseparable from every page of those books. The question of whether the people blessing this adaptation actually represent his vision — or just his estate — is one nobody in the mainstream press is asking. I go through who holds the Lewis estate, what their relationship to his work actually is, and why this “blessing” means a lot less than Netflix wants you to believe.
