Akiva Goldsman, the writer-producer behind Star Trek: Discovery and Strange New Worlds, has been tapped to lead a reimagining of three classic Irwin Allen sci-fi series for Legendary Television: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants. Goldsman and Jon Jashni are executive producing the connected universe project. Irwin Allen’s original shows ran from the mid-1960s into the early 1970s and built devoted fanbases on imaginative, adventure-first storytelling — the kind of science fiction that trusted its audience. I break down why Goldsman’s track record should concern every fan of these franchises, what a Goldsman-produced reimagining is likely to look like, and whether these classics had any chance of surviving contact with modern Hollywood.
