I attended World Fantasy Con 2026, had a genuinely wonderful time, met great people, witnessed Robert Silverberg defend John Campbell’s legacy, and wrote a positive convention report about it. The response from science fiction and fantasy professionals was immediate and unhinged. Apparently my presence at a convention — and my enjoyment of it — is intolerable to the same people who claim to want an inclusive, welcoming genre community. I break down what they said, why this reaction perfectly illustrates the ideological gatekeeping that has been driving fans away from traditional SF/F spaces for years, and why conservative and independent voices in this genre are going to keep showing up whether the establishment likes it or not.
