do you not see the significance of what’s happened to the marvel cinematic universe brand because they decided it wasn’t inclusive enough? it’s been defeated by a defunct DCEU failure. it’s absolutely historic .
The Marvels ended its run with $205 million globally. Aquaman 2 is already 25% past that after not even two weeks.
There’s just something about Aquaman that appears to be indefinable in terms of its performance. It’s done well overseas in particular, but the first movie being a billion dollar grosser, the DCEU’s highest, still feels deeply strange, and now the sequel, even though it’s crashing among all superhero movies underperforming, it’s not doing as bad as it could be.
Forbes thinks The Marvels DOES NOT DESERVE to be the LOWEST GROSSING MCU movie of all time. Marvel has been pretty brutal about The Marvels, with Bob Iger saying there wasn’t enough “executive supervision” on set, and Nia DiCosta facing all sorts of slander about her comments and actions as director (despite this being the highest grossing opening weekend for a movie directed by a black woman). The movie did score lower with critics than most, but critics have been skewing lower on almost all MCU movies lately (Quantumania did worse), and there was no mass review bombing campaign this time with fans actually seeming to like the movie for the most part.
Disney wrote on Sunday, 12/3, in a note to press, “With ‘The Marvels’ box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.”
Disney was WARNED not to make this film by Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter. No one wanted to see Brie Larson as a superhero stuck awkwardly in the middle of two Avengers movies. Perlmutter explained Marvel is a “boys” property and boys would not want to play with a toy based on this female superhero. He was right of course, but this was out of his control. Even though Bob Iger PROMISED Ike Perlmutter who saved Marvel from bankruptcy and successfully launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe he would retain CONTROL of the Marvel brand, Iger went back on his word. He would later fire Ike Perlmutter out of his own company a few years later.
