The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, has now been unfinished for 5,490 days since A Dance with Dragons released on July 12, 2011 — with no release date announced as of July 2026. In that time Martin has co-authored a physics paper, opened Milk of the Poppy cocktail bar in Santa Fe, restored the Sky Railway, consulted on House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, written for Elden Ring, and announced a fourth Dunk and Egg novella despite previously promising he wouldn’t touch that series until Winds of Winter was complete. At Worldcon 2025 Martin asked himself “Why the f*** is George R.R. Martin writing this other thing?” — and answered by announcing another side project months later. Larry Correia was right: GRRM didn’t just fail his readers — he had other things he loved more.
