Emily Wilson, the University of Pennsylvania classics professor whose 2017 Odyssey translation Christopher Nolan credited as direct inspiration for his film, published a 4,000-word review in the London Review of Books titled “An Uncomplicated Man” — calling Nolan’s script something she “would be ashamed to have written,” describing Matt Damon’s Odysseus as “lummoxy,” dismissing the film’s emotional depth as equivalent to “an elaborate Fourth of July fireworks display,” and identifying a serious ethical problem with filming in the occupied territory of Western Sahara. The review is the harshest takedown Nolan has received in his career and it comes from the one scholar whose work he built the film on.
