Poul Anderson won seven Hugo Awards, three Nebulas, four Prometheus Awards, and the SFWA Grand Master recognition across a fifty-year career that produced the Technic Civilization Saga, the Time Patrol series, The High Crusade, Three Hearts and Three Lions, and Tau Zero — while also co-founding SFWA and the Society for Creative Anachronism. Anderson’s Three Hearts and Three Lions invented the Law/Chaos cosmological framework that Michael Moorcock adapted for Elric and Gary Gygax turned into Dungeons and Dragons’ alignment system — making him one of the most influential figures in the history of fantasy gaming and fiction combined. He was also a Republican in 1960s Berkeley who was called a fascist by New Wave writers for his libertarian politics. The mainstream SF conversation has largely forgotten him. The indie SF audience he was writing for all along hasn’t.
