Sandy Petersen Says The THEATER KID Takeover of D&D Is REAL!

by 08.08.2026

Sandy Petersen — creator of Call of Cthulhu, co-author of RuneQuest, and one of the foundational figures of tabletop RPG design since 1974 — pushed back this week against the claim that Dungeons and Dragons has always attracted what critics call “theater kids,” arguing that the hobby’s current direction represents a genuine cultural capture rather than a return to its roots. The exchange began after game developer Mark Kern declared “D&D is long gone” on social media, with Petersen providing primary source testimony from someone who was present at the hobby’s founding. With WotC’s Dark Sun reveal, the OGL controversy, and ongoing D&D identity debates fresh in the community’s memory, Petersen’s historical perspective cuts directly against the revisionism that lets WotC off the hook.
