John M. Ford won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, the Philip K. Dick Award, the Nebula Award, the Theodore Sturgeon Award, three Rhysling Awards for poetry, and three Origins Awards for game design — and Robert Jordan called him “the best writer in America, bar none” while Neil Gaiman called him “the best writer I knew.” Ford’s two Star Trek novels, The Final Reflection and How Much for Just the Planet?, are considered among the finest tie-in fiction ever published, and his 1983 FASA Klingon sourcebook provided the cultural and political framework for Klingon society that Ronald D. Moore’s TNG episodes adapted without credit. After Ford’s death in 2006 at age forty-nine, his entire catalog went out of print for thirteen years due to an unexecuted will and a communication breakdown between his SF community and his family — leaving a generation of readers without access to one of genre fiction’s great voices until Tor began the recovery project in 2020.
