Lilly Wachowski, co-director of The Matrix trilogy, claims Hollywood is freezing out his $10 million trans thriller “The Hunted” because of its all-transgender cast, but Wachowski’s own box office history tells a more complicated story. After co-directing a franchise that grossed nearly half a billion dollars, Wachowski received studio budgets for Speed Racer ($120M), Cloud Atlas ($100M), and Jupiter Ascending ($176M) — films with a combined $396 million in production budgets that never came close to earning their costs back. A studio declining a niche political thriller from a director with that recent track record isn’t evidence of industry discrimination against trans content. It’s a business decision based on a filmmaker’s actual commercial history.
