The Brandon Sanderson Fantasy List That Screen Rant Made Has A Very Obvious Political PATTERN!

by 09.06.2026

Screen Rant published a list of the best fantasy books according to Brandon Sanderson — drawing from his actual public recommendations to compile titles including Patrick Rothfuss’s The Name of the Wind, Joe Abercrombie’s The Devils, Barbara Hambly’s work, and Robin Hobb. The list conspicuously excludes authors Sanderson has also publicly recommended or cited as influences, including several conservative, religious, and traditional fantasy writers whose omission follows the same political filtering pattern Screen Rant applies across its literary coverage. As a science fiction and fantasy author himself, Jon Del Arroz examines which authors made the curated list, which ones didn’t, and what the gap between Sanderson’s actual reading life and Screen Rant’s version of it reveals about how mainstream entertainment journalism handles fantasy’s political fault lines in 2026.
