Stephen Colbert’s Lord of the Rings film Shadow of the Past has been put on indefinite hiatus amid the Paramount-Skydance merger. The project — co-written by Colbert and Peter McGee — would have adapted chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring that Peter Jackson skipped, including Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, and the Barrow-wights, following Sam’s daughter Elanor as she retraces the Fellowship’s first steps fourteen years after Frodo’s departure. Sean Astin was confirmed to return as Samwise, with Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan potentially reprising Pippin and Merry. Jon breaks down why a Stephen Colbert–produced Tolkien film was always a cause for concern, and why the hold might be the best thing to happen to Middle-earth since the Rings of Power discourse began.
