GROSS Fan Fiction Hit Number One On The New York Times List And Publishing Has A CRISIS!

by 08.16.2026

Alchemised by SenLinYu hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list and sold film rights to Legendary for a reported record price for a debut novel — despite beginning its life in 2023 as “Manacled,” an explicit Harry Potter fan fiction posted on Archive of Our Own featuring Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger. The book is the latest and most commercially successful example of a publishing industry trend in which fan fiction — stripped of its original character names and sold as original fiction — has become the fastest path to bestseller status, following Fifty Shades of Grey from Twilight and multiple other romantasy titles. For original authors building worlds from scratch, the trend raises serious questions about what publishers are actually valuing and whether originality has become a commercial disadvantage.
